Nests

Updated: Nov 26, 2018

November 6, 2018

I went up on deck at sunrise and watched a pair of bald eagles swoop through the blue morning sky. They landed in a tall pine tree across the creek, where their arrival was met with anxious-sounding chirps. There are only about 7,000 nesting pairs of bald eagles in the country, and they mate for life.

Between rainstorms, our fabricators delivered our new cockpit enclosure and white vinyl cushions. A few enclosure panels had to be refitted, but we still had one day to go before departing. Meanwhile, Christoph continued his work on a variety of projects. A yard hand, strong and slender, was hoisted up the mast in a Boson’s chair to affix our new windex , comprised of a rotating wind vane, with two tabs attached at 45 degrees that whirl atop the mast, indicating the wind's direction. He was surprised by a half dozen angrily buzzing hornets, who had built their nest inside the mast. He worked quickly as the hornets flew circles around him and then bounded his way down the mast.

The new enclosure panels arrived, and we zipped them in, surrounding our nest. I continued to pack and repack our gear in an effort to optimize our boat organization, and modified our locker by locker Inventory List accordingly.
